May is Motorcycle Awareness Month

Motorcycles are everywhere and in an effort to reduce the number of accidents, injuries and deaths caused by car and motorcycle crashes, Indiana has declared the month of May to be “Motorcycle Awareness” month.

There is an 80 percent likelihood of injury if a motorcycle is involved in a crash. When involved in a crash with another vehicle, the chance of severe injury or death is 29 times higher for motorcyclists than the driver of a car. The most dangerous area for motorcyclists is at intersections. When a car and motorcycle collide at intersection the car driver is at fault 75 percent of the time, according to John Bodeker, motorcycle safety coordinator for the Indiana Department of Education.

“Typically, a car causes the crash by turning in front of the motorcycle, and the driver almost always claims he or she didn’t see the motorcycle,” Bodeker said. “Hoosier motorists need to be aware of their surroundings and watch out for motorcycles year-round.”

The Indiana Department of Education promotes motorcycle safety by offering ongoing training programs in partnership with local schools, universities and other facilities in communities across the state. Visit http://www.doe.state.in.us/safety  for more information.
